Buddha Purnima/Vesak in India

The most auspicious Buddhist festival, Buddha Purnima or Buddha Jayanti, celebrates Lord Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and death. The celebration takes place in April or May on the day of the full moon. Temples and other Buddhist sites in India, including Kushinagar, Sarnath, Bodh Gaya, and Sikkim, hold prayers.

The celebration has a special meaning for the people of Nepal because it is the birthplace of Lord Buddha. Monks conduct sermons and large processions are carried out. Devotees make offerings of butter lamps, rice coins, and flowers to temples, which are decked with lights and flowers. The followers debate and ponder on Lord Buddha’s teachings and their relevance in today’s world.

Vesak (Buddha Purnima, Buddha Jayanti) is a Buddhist festival that marks Gautama Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death. It is a gazetted holiday in India that occurs on the day of the Full Moon in April or May.

History of Buddha Purnima

Buddha’s Birthday (also known as Buddha Jayanti, also known as his day of enlightenment – Buddha Purnima, Buddha Pournami, Vasak ) is a Buddhist holiday honoring the birth of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, subsequently the Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, in most of East Asia and South Asia. Gautama Buddha was born in Lumbini, Nepal, around 563–483 BCE, according to Buddhist tradition.

The exact date of Buddha Jayanti varies every year because it is based on the Asian lunisolar calendar. Though it normally occurs on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Vaisakha, the date in the Western Gregorian calendar fluctuates.
